About the project

The Culture Tour Object Detection project was a research initiative I worked on as a student assistant at Breda University of Applied Sciences(BUAS). In this role, I served as assistant project manager, where my primary responsibilities included dividing tasks, tracking project progress, and communicating with stakeholders.

The goal of the project was to develop a Pokémon Go-style game focused on cultural heritage. In this game, users can follow a storyline through a city and scan cultural heritage objects related to the narrative.

Our team consisted of fellow student assistants from BUAS and game developers from Caledonian University of Glasgow. Our task was to establish the foundation of the project so that future students can iteratively improve the game.

Europeana

To improve object detection for the game, we worked closely together with Europeana, who have the largest collection of cultural heritage items in Europe. We worked on creating a link where we can extract data from Europeana for training purposes, and upload our own data to Europeana making it publicly available. To integrate with Europeana's system, all data had to be converted into the Europeana Data Model (EDM) format.

Current Status

The foundation of the project has been completed, and since the start of the 2024-2025 school year, students have been iteratively improving it.
